In the sun-soaked paradise of Cat Island, Bahamas, a dark and twisted tale of rivalry and vengeance unfolded between two famous figures: the renowned musician Donnie Dutler and the esteemed Bahamian actor, Mr. Tibbs Poitier. Their paths had crossed long ago when Donnie was at the pinnacle of his musical career, his heart stolen by the enchanting LuLu.

My grandmother said her real name was Louise, and her beauty and charisma captivated Donnie, inspiring him to immortalize her in a hauntingly beautiful song called “Bang Bang”, which became an anthem for love-struck hearts across the islands. But fate had other plans. In the vibrant world of show business, Mr. Tibbs Poitier, a rising star, and LuLu crossed paths. A magnetic attraction drew them together, and in the throes of passion, LuLu’s heart shifted allegiance, leaving Donnie heartbroken and consumed by a burning hatred for Mr. Tibbs Poitier.

In his fury, Donnie sought solace in the darkness that lurked at the fringes of Bahamian culture—a world of Obeah, where dark magic and twisted rituals held sway. The Obeah man, a shadowy figure shrouded in mystery, was rumored to master dark tactics. Islanders would visit him, paying large sums of money or offering tributes for him to carry out their dark intents. With a twisted grin, Donnie decided to approach the Obeah man, Mr. Tony, his heart set on revenge. He plotted the destruction of Mr. Tibbs Poitier’s career. “Nobody’s taking my woman!” he declared.

The Obeah man, drawn by Donnie’s desperation and hatred, agreed to assist him—for a large fee, one that Donnie was not prepared to pay. Sensing the raw hatred fueling the musician’s desire for vengeance, Mr. Tony agreed that Donnie could pay later. He revealed a dark secret—he had direct contact with Mr. Tibbs Poitier, thanks to their shared Cat Island roots. Mr. Tibbs Poitier’s family occasionally sent packages containing Vaseline mixed with local coconut oil, a nod to their cultural heritage and something Tibbs couldn’t get in California, where he was residing while making movies. This became the key to the Obeah man’s sinister plan.

In the dead of night, the Obeah man intercepted one such package on the mail boat before it headed to Nassau to be shipped to Tibbs. With precision and malevolence, he laced the Vaseline with a potent liquid goat pepper, creating a concoction that would deliver Mr. Tibbs Poitier into the hands of relentless torment.

But the Obeah man wasn’t done. He meticulously arranged the package to appear untampered, a cruel illusion of safety. With eerie calm, he reported his dark deeds to Donnie, who listened with vindictive satisfaction that sent shivers down the Obeah man’s spine.

“That should teach him,” Donnie laughed, his eyes glinting with malice as he imagined Mr. Tibbs Poitier’s downfall, his once-handsome face twisted in pain.

However, a different kind of darkness loomed over Donnie. He didn’t honor his part of the bargain. He refused to pay the Obeah man as planned, even though Donnie had always promised to reward him later. As days passed, the Obeah man’s resentment grew. Feeling betrayed and used, he decided it was time to teach Donnie a lesson in karma. About a year later, both men found themselves in New Providence. Seizing an opportunity during one of Donnie’s performances at the Drum Heat Club in 1980—the same club where my father met my mother and I was born sometime after, but that has nothing to do with this story—the Obeah man struck. He would…
