In the heart of Bain Town, a small neighborhood in the Bahamas during the 1960s, a boy named Allen and a girl named Tracy were inseparable. They grew up together, finding comfort in each other's company while navigating the tough streets of their community. Tracy was a quiet, thoughtful girl, while Allen was hardworking and quick to smile. They shared dreams of a better future, and though their neighborhood was poor, they always found ways to escape its harshness, even if only in their imaginations.
As the years went by, life began to pull them in different directions. Tracy’s family worked hard and managed to rise out of poverty, moving to a better part of town. Allen, however, stayed behind. He got a job in construction and became the local handyman, known for fixing anything broken. Despite his skill with his hands, Allen's life wasn’t easy. He had to struggle to make ends meet and, over time, learned to tell little lies to get by, weaving them into his daily life to survive.
Tracy, on the other hand, blossomed into a confident and successful woman. She worked at the Royal Bank of Montreal as a loan officer, holding a position that gave her influence over those seeking financial help. She had become beautiful, with sharp wit and charm, and was admired by many. But Tracy knew how to use her charm to get what she wanted, sometimes without even realizing she was doing it.
Though years had passed, fate brought Tracy and Allen together again. One day, while working on a repair job at Tracy’s aunt’s house, Allen saw Tracy. She drove a sleek BMW, her life now worlds apart from his. But despite her success, Allen saw something familiar in her, something that reminded him of the girl she used to be. Tracy, on the other hand, looked at Allen with a mix of nostalgia and pity. To her, he was part of her past, someone she had left behind.
Yet, something still drew them together. Allen and Tracy exchanged numbers and began talking again. Tracy shared stories about her life—her work at the bank, the exotic and expensive places she visited, and the successful men she dated. Allen listened quietly, but inside, he felt the distance between them growing. Still, he couldn’t help but be attracted to her, fascinated by the way she had transformed her life.
Allen, always resourceful, began to think of a way to bridge the gap between them. He knew he couldn’t offer Tracy the kind of wealth she was used to, but he wanted to impress her. Then, an idea struck him. He had access to a luxurious house that was still under construction. He decided to pretend the house was his, thinking that if Tracy believed he was building a grand home, maybe she would see him differently.
Allen told Tracy about the house, and she seemed interested. He invited her to see it, and Tracy, always curious, agreed. On the day of the visit, Allen had access to a luxury car at one of the homes he serviced in a gated community and the owners were out of town. He borrowed the car and drove Tracy to the house. It was a beautiful property, still unfinished but full of potential. As they walked through the rooms, Allen spun a tale almost as if he was a Hatchet Bay native. We all know Hatchet Bay Eleuthera boys can spin tales. He told her how he had saved up to build this dream home, telling Tracy that he planned to live there once it was complete, get married, and start a family. Tracy seemed impressed, and for a moment, Allen thought his plan was working.
But Tracy wasn’t easily fooled. She had her own ambitions and saw an opportunity to use Allen’s admiration for her. She began to play along, hinting to Allen just enough attention to keep him interested, but all the while thinking of how she could benefit from the situation and have him think she was interested in getting married and was very open to the thought of it. Tracy had a way of making people do what she wanted, and
